Everyone in the western world knows that, to live a healthy life, you need to eat moderately, drink less alcohol, stop smoking and get some exercise. Unfortunately, no-one wants to go that very basic effort so they always want a magic pill. Whether that is a wonder diet to make them lose weight in their sleep or a drug to somehow block nicotine from entering their system, we all want the easy way out. But, of course, there’s no such thing. We can see all around us what is happening while we wait for the miracle, though. The obesity epidemic is just the latest in a long line of self-inflicted lifestyle diseases that are slowly negating the life-enhancing power that is modern medicine. Wake up, everyone, and do what your parents have always told you to do. Eat your greens, donate your cigarette money to charity and avoid the happy hour at the local bar. And what to do with all your newfound free time? It’s obvious - get on that step machine.
Alok Jha from The Guardian discussed the Atkins diet and issues of obesity during the x-change at the Dana centre in June.
