Breathless climbers
'I looked at Tenzing and in spite of the balaclava, goggles and oxygen mask all encrusted with long icicles that concealed his face, there was no disguising his infectious grin of pure delight as he looked around him. We shook hands and then Tenzing threw his arm around my shoulders and we thumped each other on the back until we were almost breathless' - Sir Edmund Hillary, 29th May, on the summit of Mount Everest.

Have you ever wondered what measures mountaineers take when climbing Everest or other high altitude places?

You might like to …

• carry out some research into the effects of increasing altitude
• design and carry out some tests to see if plants would survive at high altitude; work out the minimum amount of oxygen needed for a plant to survive
• design and carry out a test to see how altitude affects the temperature at which water boils.
