What last year's fellows said

Andrew Read, Institute of Cell, Animal and Population Biology – The Irish Times
It had never crossed my mind that a few weeks on the Irish Times would teach me so much about my real job. I had also not been expecting the experience to be so stimulating. But I did expect to learn a lot about journalism, and I sure did. My host chucked me in at the deep end and kept me there. From working with him, and watching the UK broadsheet hacks in action at the Festival of Science, I have a new respect for professional science journalists – these guys really are extremely good.

Orla Kennedy, Northern Ireland Centre for Food and Health – The Telegraph
We as scientists need a greater understanding of the workings of the media and the tools which are employed to communicate effectively to the public, and we need to use these to get good copy for ourselves and not just bad press!

Joanne Baker, Oxford University – Nature News Update
The highlight of the placement was a week at the BA Festival of Science as a lone-wolf journalist for Nature. The pressure to find good stories was ratcheted up, and the cut and thrust of the press room was infectious, but the way was smoothed by generous nightly soirees for exhausted science reporters. The entire experience was exhilarating.

Lucy Rogers, Abax Systems – The Guardian
The four-week placement took me out of my comfort zone of engineering and computers and thrust me into a new and hectic environment with a very steep learning curve.
