The BA and its volunteers
The BA is passionate about connecting science with people and its volunteers play a vital role in helping us achieve this across the UK.

The BA’s Branch Officers help organize the varied activities of the 32 Branches from Cornwall to Aberdeen. Branch activities include excursions, talks and discussion events. To get in touch with your nearest Branch, see In Your Area. To discuss starting a new Branch, please contact your Regional Officer.

Every March, National Science Week involves hundreds of thousands of people in science activities across the UK. BA volunteers play an important role in organizing National Science Week activities for young people and adult audiences. Organizers get help and support from the BA in planning and publicizing their event.

Another way in which BA volunteers make a difference is by helping with activities for young people, including science clubs. Regional Officers can sometimes also make use of volunteers to help deliver events.

The BA also works closely with , the national network of SETPOINTs – one-stop shops for science-based activities in schools. SETNET coordinates a network of Science & Engineering Ambassadors – volunteers who help take science activities into schools to enhance the science curriculum.

All BA volunteers working with young people are expected to observe the BA's Code of Conduct relating to Child Protection, and may be asked to complete a Criminal Records Bureau check.

The 16 Scientific Sections of the BA organize events at the BA Festival of Science.

In recognition of the great value and impact of our volunteers, the BA has instituted the Sir Walter Bodmer Award for Volunteers.  This annual award is made each June, and the winner is invited to receive their award at the Festival of Science Dinner. The patron of the award is Sir Walter Bodmer, a past Chair of the BA Council, and a founder of one of the biggest volunteering organizations in the UK (Imperial Cancer Research Fund). The two award winners in are: Colin Axon from the Bristol & Bath Branch of the BA, and the science club leaders at St. Mary’s School, Bridgend. More information about the winners can be found here.
